Download the public ReSpeakerLitev1.1.step model from the official ReSpeaker Lite Resources section. It is a board-level v1.1 model, not a complete Voice Assistant Kit, speaker, or enclosure assembly.

Prerequisites:

  • The hardware revision printed on the physical ReSpeaker Lite board
  • STEP-compatible CAD software

  2. Download ReSpeakerLitev1.1.step from the official file link.
  3. Import the file into the CAD tool and compare mounting holes, board outline, and connector locations with the physical board revision.

Run the official ReSpeaker Lite I2S test with a matching 16 kHz I2S firmware. The sketch writes a test signal, reads microphone-array samples, and prints I2S RX pass! when more than 16,000 of 32,000 received samples are neither zero nor 0xFFFF.

Prerequisites:

  • Official ReSpeaker Lite 16 kHz I2S firmware installed on the XMOS/XU316
  • Arduino IDE configured for XIAO ESP32S3
  • A USB data connection to the XIAO ESP32S3 port
  1. Open the current official ReSpeaker Lite I2S Test page and copy its sketch without changing the documented I2S pins or 16,000 Hz rate.
  2. Upload the sketch to the XIAO ESP32S3 and open Serial Monitor at 115200 baud.
  3. Let the test complete its first read and, if needed, its second read.
  4. Record the final I2S RX pass! or I2S RX fail! result before changing ESPHome, application, or hardware settings.

Success criteria:

  • The sketch initializes I2S and prints I2S RX pass!
  • The received sample stream is not entirely zero or 0xFFFF

Notes:

  • A failed test is evidence that the documented I2S link check failed; by itself it does not prove a defective board or authorize a replacement diagnosis.
  • This 16 kHz test must not be used unchanged with a 48 kHz firmware profile.

Connect Windows to the ReSpeaker Lite XMOS USB-C port and make sure the XMOS is running USB firmware. I2S firmware is for communication with XIAO ESP32S3 and is not expected to enumerate as the normal ReSpeaker Lite USB sound device.

Prerequisites:

  • A known-good USB data cable connected to the ReSpeaker Lite XMOS USB-C port
  • The official USB firmware image when USB audio is required
  1. Confirm that the cable is connected to the ReSpeaker Lite XMOS USB-C port, not only to the XIAO ESP32S3 USB port.
  2. Confirm that the XMOS firmware is the USB variant. If it is the I2S variant, flash the current USB firmware using the official DFU procedure.
  3. If Device Manager shows ReSpeaker Lite with a warning after flashing USB firmware, uninstall that device, select the option to remove its driver software when offered, and power-cycle the board. Windows should reinstall the USB audio driver.
  4. Open Windows Sound settings and select ReSpeaker Lite as the input device.

Success criteria:

  • Windows Device Manager shows ReSpeaker Lite without a warning icon
  • Windows Sound settings list ReSpeaker Lite as an audio input and a test recording contains speech

Notes:

  • This public FAQ is intentionally limited to Windows USB-audio detection. COM-port and sketch-upload failures belong to a separate XIAO programming FAQ.
  • A XIAO USB-JTAG or serial entry is not evidence that the XMOS USB-audio interface is active.

Connect the computer to the XIAO ESP32S3 USB port, put the XIAO into BootLoader mode, and upload a minimal Blink sketch. This restores the XIAO programming path; it is separate from updating the ReSpeaker Lite XU316 audio firmware through the other USB port with dfu-util.

Prerequisites:

  • A known-good USB data cable connected to the XIAO ESP32S3 USB port
  • Arduino IDE with the current ESP32 board package and XIAO ESP32S3 selected
  1. Confirm that the cable is connected to the XIAO ESP32S3 USB port, not the ReSpeaker Lite XMOS/XU316 audio-and-DFU port.
  2. Press and hold the XIAO BOOT button, connect the XIAO USB port to the computer, and then release BOOT.
  3. Select the newly visible XIAO port in Arduino IDE and upload File > Examples > 01.Basics > Blink.
  4. Press Reset once and confirm that the Blink sketch runs. If the port still does not appear, save the complete upload error, operating system, selected board, and selected port before requesting support.

Success criteria:

  • A programming port appears for the XIAO ESP32S3
  • The Blink sketch uploads successfully and runs after reset

Notes:

  • The carrier-board USR and Mute buttons are not substitutes for the XIAO BOOT button.
  • This procedure does not change the ReSpeaker Lite USB/I2S audio firmware.

Start from the current configuration in the community-maintained repository linked by the Seeed Wiki and use an ESPHome version that satisfies its current min_version. The final main.cpp.o Error 1 line only reports that a build target failed; it does not identify the root cause.

Prerequisites:

  • A backup of your substitutions, Wi-Fi credentials, API keys, and other local secrets
  • Access to the complete ESPHome Device Builder or command-line compilation log
  1. Open the current upstream config/respeaker-satellite-dashboard-example.yaml and the base configuration it imports. Do not start from the long inline YAML snapshot in the Wiki.
  2. Check esphome.min_version in the current upstream base and update ESPHome if necessary. It is 2026.6.0 at the verification date, but upstream may raise it later.
  3. Reapply only your substitutions and secrets to the current example. Avoid copying old component blocks into the new configuration unless you have verified that they are still required.
  4. Remove the previous build output with the ESPHome clean-build action or the matching CLI clean command, then compile the current configuration again.
  5. If compilation still fails, find the first configuration or compiler error above the terminal target-failure line. Save that error, the surrounding log, the ESPHome version, and the upstream configuration revision before requesting help.

Success criteria:

  • ESPHome accepts the current configuration without a minimum-version or configuration-validation error
  • Compilation completes and produces a flashable firmware artifact for the XIAO ESP32S3

Notes:

  • The linked integration is community-maintained, warns that breaking changes are possible, and may move independently of the inline Wiki snapshot.
  • The current upstream min_version, not a permanently pinned version in this FAQ, is the authoritative compilation floor.
  • A terminal main.cpp.o Error 1 line alone is insufficient for diagnosis; different earlier errors can end with the same target-failure summary.

Why do the ReSpeaker Lite I2S examples play loud static instead of audio?

First make the sketch sample rate match the installed I2S firmware. The official recording/playback example is configured for 16,000 Hz, while the official firmware repository also provides images explicitly labeled for 48 kHz. Running the 16 kHz sketch against a 48 kHz image can make the stream unusable or sound like static.

Prerequisites:

  • The exact filename of the installed ReSpeaker Lite I2S firmware
  • The current official example and its AudioInfo configuration
  • A known-good speaker or headphone connected to a documented output
  1. Confirm that the XMOS/XU316 is running I2S firmware, not USB firmware.
  2. Check the exact firmware filename in the official directory. A filename containing 48k requires a 48,000 Hz I2S configuration; the standard v1.0.9 I2S image uses the 16,000 Hz example path.
  3. For a 48 kHz image, change the example to AudioInfo info(48000, 2, 32). For the standard 16 kHz image, retain AudioInfo info(16000, 2, 32).
  4. Rebuild and upload the sketch through the XIAO ESP32S3 USB port, then repeat the playback or loopback test.

Success criteria:

  • The configured sample rate matches the profile named by the installed firmware image
  • The test produces intelligible loopback audio or a clean generated tone instead of full-scale static

Notes:

  • Do not pin an old AudioTools library version solely because one case used it; the current public product evidence establishes the sample-rate boundary, not a permanent third-party-library version requirement.
  • If matching the rate does not resolve the symptom, run the separate official I2S link test before diagnosing hardware.

Which audio outputs are available on ReSpeaker Lite?

ReSpeaker Lite provides a board speaker connector documented for the 5 W amplified-speaker path and a 3.5 mm output for headphones or an active speaker. The current official hardware description also states that inserting a 3.5 mm plug mutes the JST speaker path and switches output to the external device.

Prerequisites:

  • A playback application or firmware path that sends audio to ReSpeaker Lite
  • A headphone, active speaker, or speaker matched to the documented connector path
  1. Power the system down before changing the speaker connection.
  2. Use the 3.5 mm jack for headphones or an active speaker, or use the board speaker connector for the documented amplified-speaker path.
  3. Power the system and begin playback at a low volume.
  4. If the JST speaker becomes silent after a 3.5 mm plug is inserted, remove the plug to return to the default JST path.

Success criteria:

  • Playback is audible from the selected output
  • Inserting a 3.5 mm device switches playback away from the JST speaker path as documented

Do not treat direct single-cell battery input as supported. The published ReSpeaker Lite power contract is 5 V through USB or the external 5 V supply pad. If a battery is required, regulate it to a stable 5 V before connecting the board.

Prerequisites:

  • A regulated 5 V supply sized for the board and any connected speaker load
  • Verified polarity and a common ground
  • The power source disconnected while wiring
  1. Configure and measure the regulator output before connecting ReSpeaker Lite; it must be a stable 5 V.
